WEDU PBS signed on the air October 27, 1958, and has a rich history of excellence in local storytelling.
As the largest PBS station in Florida, WEDU broadcasts 52,560 hours of commercial free television annually across six channels that reach 6.4 million Floridians, and countless opportunities for digital engagement through video streaming, web and social media, and robust educational resources. We are thoughtful in telling stories that amplify local voices. We explore topics that affect our community, our country, and the world that prioritizes solution-based programming that addresses the needs of our viewership. We feature diverse voices designed to spark dialogue and facilitate these conversations through events and outreach.
Our work has received profound critical acclaim including nine Suncoast Regional Emmy nominations and six wins, a Griot Drum Award from the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists, and was a finalist for a prestigious Public Media Award in 2021. Over the last 20 years, WEDU has earned 49 Emmy Awards. Additionally, WEDU-produced programs such as The Light of Mine: The Making of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe have been selected for national distribution through PBS and other partners. PK-12 education programming and resources reached 90,000 families during the height of pandemic remote learning.
